Swap This #4 – Taco Kits for Make Your Own

Each fortnight for the six months until the end of 2013, I will be doing a series of short posts titled ‘Swap This’. These posts will be centred around ways to make little changes by using alternative products to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. I hope to show you that there are other options to buying over packaged goods and maybe you will save a little money too!
Tacos, Fajitas, Burritos, any kind of wrap food where everyone can help themselves are a huge hit at our house. However, I do struggle with the amount of packaging involved in something that is essentially meat, bread and salad. There is an easy way around this problem though, make our own! I have started buying a bottle of taco sauce and freezing any leftover sauce in an ice cube tray for next time, this way nothing is wasted plus the glass bottle can then be reused or recycled. I have been tinkering with my own seasoning and have found that a teaspoon of Chilli Powder, Cumin and Moroccan Seasoning make a good combination. Finally, I haven’t tried this yet, but I recently found a recipe for tortillas over at Sustainable Mum. If I can get the tortillas down pat, that will mean the box and three plastic sachets of packaging will no longer be sent to landfill.
