Each fortnight for the six months until the end of 2013, I will be doing a series of short posts titled ‘Swap This’. These posts will be centred around ways to make little changes by using alternative products to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. I hope to show you that there are other options to buying over packaged goods and maybe you will save a little money too!
Cheesesticks are by far the most annoying packaged snack item for me. Mainly because of the minor detail that Miss Logical and Master Mayhem beg for them but in actual fact DO NOT LIKE THEM! We have conversation that goes like this:
Miss Logical: Oh please can we have cheese sticks, please, please.
Master Mayhem: Yeah, cheesesticks! (He has no morals that boy and will jump on any bandwagon)
Me: But you don’t even like them.
Miss Logical: I do now. Please, please, please.
Master Mayhem: Yeah, I do!
Me: No times infinity
So this time when I did finally get them (for research purposes) they both took one bite and tried to palm them off to me and I definitely know I don’t like them! Plus these babies cost me a cool $5.20 whereas I could have bought a whole block of cheese for less than that! Never again. Instead of the packaged cheese sticks an idea is to cut cheese sticks or what I like to call Cheese Treats (it’s all in the marketing, right?) from your normal (and probably nicer tasting) block of cheese and put them in a cute container (marketing and packaging, it’s all there) Or be creative with some cookie or cocktail cutters. Both kids love it when I build cheese stacks on their plate, or give them stars and lightning (the lightning being the cheese cut offs – they’ll believe anything!) It probably looks like hard work but it takes no longer than the time it takes to wrestle a wrapper off a cheese stick and I think it brings a bigger smile.
Treat Disclaimer: Yes, I did go against everything I believe in and bought these packaged items which I have tried to turn my back on since the start of the year. My defence is that it was in the name of research and photography. I will add, the day I bought all of these ‘treats’ we ended up having one of our “harder” days at home with Miss Logical and Master Mayhem screaming for small packages of goodies and me trying in vain to ration them out all the while feeling dirty for buying them. Please don’t judge me!
