Swap This #9 – Disposable Plastic Sushi Containers for Reusable Containers
|Each fortnight for the six months until the end of 2013, I will be doing a series of short posts titled ‘Swap This’. These posts will be centred around ways to make little changes by using alternative products to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. I hope to show you that there are other options to buying over packaged goods and maybe you will save a little money too!
This swap took a bit of convincing for Mr T. Sunday is generally sushi day for Mr T, Miss Logical and Master Mayhem. I opt out, I like sushi but I don’t need it every Sunday. Anywho as our sushi order got bigger to accommodate everyone’s appetites I couldn’t help but notice the amount of plastic containers that were brought home each week plus the handful of plastic fish to hold the soy sauce. Sure, the plastic containers can go in the recycling but as the saying goes, reduce, reuse, recycle I felt we should set about trying to reduce rather than just recycle. It was one of those scary moments when you have to ask your favourite food operator if they will be open to your crazy suggestion and if they’re not you have to go back and hide your embarrassment while you put in your regular order or find another favourite food operator. Thankfully they were up for it and everyone is happy. Well, there was a bit of protest from Miss Logical and Master Mayhem as I think a lot of the fun is in the plastic fish soy sauces but it was either soy sauce out of the bottle or no sushi. They chose the new and improved sushi and soy sauce option.
Hi Bernadette,
Love this post about sushi and the enormous amount of plastic.
Love your blog and great tips. Inspirational.
My name is Gretha and I am addressing our addiction to disposable plastic, in particular waste associated with drinking bottled water.
Perhaps yo’ve heard of 321 Water, the Australian made and designed innovative reusable water bottle with French press filter system.
But my new project is called Project 0 which aims to make drinking tap water from public fountains more attractive through art and design. It is really about BY0.
It would be so good if you could mention it on your blog or Facebook.

Hi Gretha, Thanks for your comment. I really love the Project 0 concept and have checked out your blog. I am fairly organised for posts for the rest of the year but will put this on my list for next year. Thanks again.
