Each fortnight for the six months until the end of 2013, I will be doing a series of short posts titled ‘Swap This’. These posts will be centred around ways to make little changes by using alternative products to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. I hope to show you that there are other options to buying over packaged goods and maybe you will save a little money too!
When did we start believing that muesli bars were healthy? Because they’re not, they’re really not (okay, there are some that are not too bad but they are generally not the ones the kids want). I think somewhere back in the eighties when Lisa Curry-Kenny was running on the beach with her gorgeous tanned and healthy looking children we all thought, well muesli bars must be healthy, look at the Curry-Kennys! Well the Curry-Kenny’s are now just the Curry’s and muesli bars are about as healthy as the yoghurt drizzle on them is dairy.
Plus there is that also that little problem of going through a cardboard box and six wrappers of waste. When you could easily make a whole tray of muesli bars or muesli slice for next to nothing in the dollar department too.
I know, there is the thought of ‘But I’m tired, I hate cooking and the last thing I want to do in my busy day is make muesli bars’. There is another option, buy in bulk, yup that little aisle with all the dried fruit and colorful rice crackers…they generally have cut up muesli bars too. And if you have your convenient Onya bag with you, then you’ve saved time, saved money and saved waste.
