Homemade Falafel Recipe

Homemade falafels has always been on my list of vegetarian basics to try making for myself. I always assumed they would be something really hard to make but this recipe couldn’t be easier. Plus it’s made with a lot of simple ingredients that are usually in my pantry. I am going to freeze the rest and have them for my lunches throughout the week. Yahoo!

15 mins prep
30 mins chilling time
30 mins cooking

  • 1 x cans chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 3/4 cup coriander, chopped
  • 1 x onion, chopped
  • 1 x egg white
  • 1 x clove of garlic (or 2 if you really like a hit of garlic)
  • 2 x tsp ground coriander
  • 1 x tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder (optional)
  • 1/3 cup plain flour
  • Hummus, salad, natural yoghurt and pitta bread to serve

Make sure your chickpeas are well drained so the mixture doesnt’ become too runny.

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celcius
  2. In a food processor, combine chickpeas, fresh coriander, onion, egg-white, garlic, ground coriander and cumin. Process until almost smooth. Add flour. Process to combine. The mixture should remain a little chunky
  3. Lay a baking tray with baking paper and spray with oil spray
  4. Roll into balls or spoon the mixture onto the tray. Spray a small amount of oil spray over the balls
  5. Cook in oven for 20 minutes. Turn over and cook for another five minutes or until golden
  6. Serve with salad, pitta bread, hummus and natural yoghurt

If you have time while waiting for your falafels to cook why not try making your own hummus.
